Gymnopédies

At the kids park in Five Steps Ahead, Carolyn dances for Robert in response to "Polovtsian Dances", and then the music on the radio moves on to Gymnopédies by Erik Satie.

As Gymnopédies begins to play, Carolyn begins to walk through the paths of a labyrinth laid out with stones on the ground. Robert follows her, and they move to the music. They exit the labyrinth with the music still playing, and their romantic moment is interrupted by Robert's friend, Hal.

Erik Satie wrote Gymnopédies in part to defy traditional classical structure and harmonies. Robert is also defying traditional values and breaking the rules of time.

Gymnopédies has the sense of children dancing, so it is appropriate to the children's park. In our story, their play blends with the music, and its slow and painful sounds reflect the slow and painful love between Robert and Carolyn.
