Mozart Sonata No. 16

In Five Steps Ahead, Robert's friend, Hal, looks for him at Carolyn's house. At first, he doesn't think anyone is home, but he hears piano music playing from the back of the house. He investigates and finds a record playing in Carolyn's music studio. It's Mozart's Sonata No. 16. He follows the music, which leads him to a painful discovery.

Sonata No. 16 is a lively piano piece suitable for a music box, instantly recognizable. It matches Robert and Carolyn's moods, and contrasts with Hal's. The piece ends fairly quickly in our story, so there's no time for all three movements. The first is the most recognizable and could be used without the other two. But the third movement could be used in this context, and that would be more consistent with the piece ending as Hal leaves.
